Lunchboxes and Lululemon bags filled with food from home crowd the tables during lunch time. At school, many students aren’t satisfied with or are allergic to the full spread of offerings. Bringing lunch from home is reassuring for students who want to know what they are eating ahead of time. Depending on what they pack, this alternative can bring extra health benefits.
“For lunch, I bring pasta salad because it is easy to make. I look forward to having it during the school day. The pros of bringing lunch to school is that it is homemade so I know that I am going to like it, the only con is that I have to plan ahead and choose what I want the day before which takes time,” said Kenzie Miller (8).
The night before, students pick and choose out what they are going to pack for lunch the next day. This might seem time consuming or annoying, but it leaves out the students’ worry of forgetting their lunch or needing to eat something from the school lunch. While the school provides alternatives for people with allergies some students prefer food from home.
“Everyday I bring steak and rice because of my allergies, so I can’t eat the school food. The pros and cons are that I don’t have to wait in the lines, but the cons are my allergies and that I have to wait alone at the table while my friends go get their food,” Lily Garcia (8) said.
Students choices vary from, sushi from Makoto, homemade pasta salad, sandwiches, and chips. Some students also like to bring food ordered from Uber Eats as it’s easier for them rather than making something homemade. They enjoy having the option of choosing what they want that day for lunch, other than only having to pick from a couple options that don’t satisfy them.
“So everyday I bring a sandwich or a snack pack that has salami, cheese, ham and breadsticks. Then I also bring snacks like goldfish, pirates booty, strawberries and grapes. The pros of it are that I get to choose what I want every day and the cons are that I have to constantly go to the store to buy food items I want and sometimes I forget the lunch when I go from house to house,” Olivia Trejos (8) said.
